About Us

The Maine Central Railroad was created in 1862 through the merger of the Androscoggin & Kennebec Railroad and Penobscot & Kennebec Railroad. It existed until being bought by Guilford Transportation Industries in 1981.

Up until 2023, there was no organization dedicated to the history of the railroad. This resulted in significant fragmentation of the companies records amongst various archives and private collections.

In 2025, MECRRHS received a large donation of the remaining Maine Central records from CSX previously stored in the basement of the yard office in Rigby. It is working diligently to digitize and make them available to researchers.
